This exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler Berlin highlights Flanagan’s engagement with different materials, which he considered to be of equal importance, free from hierarchy. The focus lies on four different materials in particular, and on a wide range of scales, from stone carvings and sheet metal works, to tiny ceramic ‘pinch pots’ and monumental bronzes.
The exhibition title refers to a turn of speech often used by Flanagan, inherited from his father. He described it as having an effect akin to boxing, which suited his elliptical, mysterious, unpredictable, and often humorous use of language.
