Miquel Barcelo and Barry Flanagan, ‘Cerámiques i Dibuxos’

15 March 2012

This exhibition curated by Enrique Juncosa in the newly renovated gallery spaces of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Ibiza brings together ceramics and works on paper by Miquel Barcelo and Barry Flanagan. The artists met in Mallorca 1992 when Flanagan’s exhibition (title) curated by Richard McNeff and Elena Ruiz Sastre toured from Ibiza to Palma. Flanagan used the occasion to make a visit to Barcelo’s house and studio. They immediately become friends. As Richard McNeff notes in his catalogue essay, Flanagan remarked after the meeting, ‘Barcelo has a head like Picasso’. The comment suggests a multi-layered resemblance and it shows Flanagan’s elliptical and characteristic use of phrases which are open to multiple meanings. Several of the ceramics on show by Flanagan are being exhibited for the first time in this important juxtaposition of the two artist’s practices.

A fully illustrated catalogue will be available
