Homeless Sculpture

A day-long series of talks by an international panel of academics and curators on the subject of ‘Homeless Sculpture’, part of the free Whitworth Studies Programme.

Sculpture in the modern and post-modern periods has been characterized by its homelessness. Although developments within site-specific art and installation practices have to some extent reasserted the importance of place and location for sculpture, the production of a single, isolated and nomadic object remains a primary mode of expression for sculptors.

A display of sculptures from the Whitworth collection curated by Charles Hewlings, Clare O’Dowd and John Plowman acts as a catalyst for this informal discussion event. Over the course of the day they lead one of three panels of speakers of international renown to explore issues of production, display and reception in relation to the homeless objects of sculpture.
