Barry Flanagan at Ikon Gallery – Associated Events

On Wednesday 16th October at Medicine Bakery and Gallery Roma Piotrowska, Curatorial Officer at Wolverhampton Art Gallery will introduce three films by Polish-British artist duo Franciszka and Stefan Themerson, including The Adventure of a Good Citizen (1937), Calling Mr Smith (1943) and The Eye and the Ear (1944–5).  As a student of Birmingham School of Art, Flanagan included the Themersons in an exhibition at the RBSA and continued to include them in his magazine Silâns (1964–5). This event is supported by Film Hub Midlands and LUX.

Other events include:

  • Tuesday 29th October – ‘Between Poetry and Sculpture’ a discussion between Jo Melvin (Director of the Estate of Barry Flanagan) and the artist Roger Moss (an assistant of Flanagan’s) on the poetic’s of Flanagan’s practice.
  • Thursday 31 October – ‘Leaping Hares Workshop’ a creative workshop for families taking inspiration from Flanagan’s Leaping Hares.
  • Thursday 7th November – ‘OTO at Ikon: Gavin Bryars and Morgan Goff’ – Bryars, a prominent figure in minimalist and experimental music presents seven one-minute pieces written in response to Flanagan’s involvement in ‘Pataphysics
  • Thursday 21st November – ‘Ikon Youth Programme: Showcase Bollard Project’ Ikon Youth Programme and students from Birmingham School of Art respond to Barry Flanagan’s bollards project.
